Feminist Reading and Interpretation of the Bible

Women Theological Forum (WTF) conducted two days’ seminar, 19-20 August 2017, on “Feminist Reading and Interpretation of the Bible” at Theological Institute of Laity (TIL), Sadhuke, Gujranwala.

The seminar commenced with prayer and reading from the Holy Scripture by Ms. Humera Salamat and Ms. Fozia Niamat respectively. In her welcoming remarks Mrs. Alishba Javed Akhtar (Director-MAP) highlighted aims and objectives of the seminar.

Mrs. Noreen Haroon Gill a lay thinker and social activist spoke on “Feminist Reading and Interpretation of the Bible”. She said the meaning of feminism is gender equality and who reflect and act on this theme do feminist theology. She said that Jesus Christ was the great supporter of women. He advocated for equal rights and status to the women in society. She added that in order to understand feminist theology one needed to read Luke’s gospel. All women should read the Bible in feminist perspective so as to understand importance of women in the family, church and in society. The meaning of feminist reading and interpretation is to share new thoughts with others. This positive step can bring a positive change in society.

The session followed by the group workshop. The participants actively shared their thoughts. They said such seminars should be organized in future too so that more and more women can know about the feminist reading and interpretation of the Bible.

85 women attended the seminar from different cities and towns of the country - Sheikhupura, Ghazi Minara, Farooqabad, Hafizabad, Jurian, Gujranwala, Harpoke, Ladywala Warich- Gujranwala, Lahore, Raja and Fr. Stani Selas Town, Sadhoke.
